So, guess what? The Webby Awards are a scam! Non-profit websites will have to look pretty deep into their couches to scrounge up $245 for the "processing fee". Basically, this is an expensive version of the "PointCom Top 5%" free advertising deal from the early days of the Web.
In its place, we should hype the EFF Pioneer Awards. The Pioneers are awarded for exceptional online journalism, Web innovations, and achievements in free speech online. For example, this year Jimmy Wales and Craiglist got awards, and last year in 2001 Seth Finkelstein got one. The Pioneers demonstrate the real heroes of the Web, rather than stupid, pointless blogs like "Cute Overload" that felt like paying up.
Correction: It was 2001, not last year.
